in a large saucepan combine butter, dried fruit, sugar, brandy, water, treacle and plaistowe 70% cocoa chocolate, stir over low heat, until well combined and all ingredients are melted.
meanwhile, sift flours, bicarbonate of soda and mixed spice into a large bowl; stir in orange zest. add chocolate mixture to dry ingredients, stir in eggs and mix until well combined. spoon mixture into prepared pan, smooth top. decorate with blanched almonds.
bake 3 hours, or until cake is cooked when tested. brush cake with extra brandy, sherry or rum if desired. cool cake in pan over night.
